Women Shaping Membership: Leaders, Career Builders and Changemakers

International Women’s Day is not just a single moment of recognition. It highlights the leadership, expertise and impact women bring to membership organisations, and your members, every day of the year.

Across the sector, women are leading teams, building communities, driving strategy and shaping the future of membership every day. International Women’s Day 2026 is an opportunity to recognise that ongoing contribution and shift the conversation from token gestures to genuine appreciation and meaningful recognition.

Membership organisations are, at their heart, about people. They connect professionals, strengthen industries, and create communities that help individuals grow in their careers.

Behind so many of these communities are remarkable women.

This International Women’s Day, we want to recognise the women shaping membership organisations across the UK. From emerging professionals to CEOs and board directors, women are building communities, leading strategy, influencing policy, and supporting careers every single day.

At Membership Bespoke, we see this impact every day through the organisations we support with recruitment and the professionals we work with throughout their careers.

As our Marketing Director, Maura, puts it:

“In membership and recruitment, the work we do is about people and possibility. Behind every career shaped and every organisation strengthened are brilliant women leading with insight, integrity, and genuine impact.”

Across every discipline within membership organisations, women are making an extraordinary difference.

Women in leadership: progress, but more to do.

Across the UK, women are increasingly represented in leadership roles, but the journey towards true balance continues.

According to the FTSE Women Leaders Review, women now hold around 40% of board positions in FTSE 350 companies, a significant milestone for gender representation at this level.

However, representation drops at Executive Level. Women hold around 30% of executive leadership roles in the UK’s largest companies, highlighting the continued need to support leadership pipelines.

Within membership organisations, we see many women stepping into leadership roles, guiding strategy, building inclusive cultures, and shaping the future of the sector.

Their leadership is visible across every one of the eight disciplines that power successful membership organisations.

Leadership and Strategy

Women shaping the future of membership organisations.

At the highest levels of membership organisations, women are setting direction and defining purpose.

We see women thriving as Chief Executives, Managing Directors, Directors of Membership, Strategy Directors, and Heads of Department.

These leaders guide organisational growth while championing the missions that membership bodies exist to serve. They bring clarity, empathy, and strategic vision, ensuring organisations remain relevant in a fast-changing professional landscape.

Membership

The community builders

Membership teams are the beating heart of membership organisations.

Women are excelling at every level of this discipline, from Membership Executives and Coordinators through to Membership Managers, Heads of Membership, and Directors of Membership.

Their work is deeply people-focused. They nurture relationships, grow communities, and ensure members feel valued and supported. They are often the first connection professionals have with their professional body and the reason they remain engaged.

Marketing and Communications

The storytellers of the sector

Marketing teams shape how membership organisations connect with their communities.

Across roles such as Marketing Executives, Digital Marketing Specialists, Marketing Managers, Heads of Marketing and Marketing Directors, women are leading campaigns, building brands, and strengthening member engagement.

They translate organisational purpose into powerful communication that inspires professionals to connect, learn and belong.

Events

Creating the moments that bring members together.

Few things build community like events.

Women working as Events Assistants, Events Coordinators, Events Managers and Heads of Events design and deliver the conferences, awards ceremonies, learning programmes and networking experiences that shape membership organisations.

Their work creates opportunities for professionals, members and whole industries to meet, share knowledge and grow their networks.

Education and Learning

Supporting lifelong professional development

Membership bodies play a vital role in supporting professional growth.

Women working as Learning Coordinators, Programme Managers, Heads of Learning and Education Directors design and deliver programmes that support careers at every stage.

Through qualifications, training, and professional standards, they help members develop the skills and expertise that move sectors forward.

Policy, Public Affairs and Research

Giving members a voice

Membership organisations play a powerful role in shaping policy and representing their sectors.

Women in roles such as Policy Officer, Research Manager, Public Affairs Manager and Director of Policy analyse emerging trends, champion their members’ interests and shape critical conversations across industries.

Their work ensures the voice of members is heard at the highest levels.

Finance and Operations

The people who keep organisations running

Behind every successful organisation is a strong operational and financial foundation.

Women working as Finance Officers, Finance Managers, Operations Managers and Chief Financial Officers ensure organisations run effectively, sustainably, and responsibly.

Their expertise allows membership bodies to invest in their members, teams, and long-term impact.

Secretarial & Governance

Supporting strong and effective governance

Effective governance is at the heart of well-run membership organisations.

Women working as Secretariats, Governance Managers, Governance Officers and Heads of Governance help ensure organisations operate with transparency, accountability and strong leadership.

Through their work, they guide boards, uphold regulatory standards and support decision-making that enables organisations to operate confidently and responsibly.

Communications & PR

Shaping reputation and amplifying impact

Clear communication helps membership organisations connect with their members,  audiences and demonstrate their value.

Women working as Communications Managers, PR Managers, Media Relations Specialists and Heads of Communications shape the narratives that strengthen organisational reputation and visibility.

Through strategic messaging, storytelling and media engagement, they help organisations share their impact, build trust and keep members informed and engaged.

Business Development and Partnerships

Driving growth and opportunity

Strong partnerships help membership organisations grow their reach and impact.

Women working as Business Development Executives, Partnership Managers, Commercial Managers and Directors of Partnerships build the relationships that open up new opportunities for members and organisations alike.

Through their work, they enable collaboration, spark innovation and underpin sustainable growth.

Women shaping membership at every career stage

One of the most inspiring aspects of the membership sector is the breadth of women building careers within it.

From early-career professionals stepping into executive and coordinator roles, to experienced managers leading teams and board-level leaders shaping strategy, women are making a powerful impact across the sector.

They mentor colleagues, strengthen organisations and help professionals build meaningful careers. And every year we see more women stepping into leadership roles across membership organisations.
