New apprentice talent for your members. New revenue for you. A stronger future for your sector.
Have you, or your members, tried to work out what apprenticeship funding your organisation could access?
Or perhaps your members have mentioned apprenticeships, but somewhere between funding rules, eligibility, training providers, job descriptions, recruitment, paperwork and figuring out who actually does what, something that initially sounded quite straightforward suddenly became anything but.
Because apprenticeships make a great deal of sense in theory: bring new talent into your industry, develop people around the skills employers actually need, give someone a genuine career pathway and, where eligible, access funding towards their training. What is not to like?
The problem is that getting from “we would like an apprentice” to actually having the right person sitting in the business can feel surprisingly complicated, particularly for smaller organisations that do not have dedicated apprenticeship, early careers or learning and development teams.
And if it feels complicated for one employer, imagine that challenge multiplied across an entire membership.
That is one of the reasons we created Sector Futures.
What if your membership organisation could make apprenticeships easier for an entire industry or profession?
Sector Futures is a partnership between Membership Bespoke, Apprentago, the UK's leading apprenticeship platform, and Apprentify as a training partner for upskilling, designed to help associations and membership organisations give their members a much simpler route into apprenticeships and, at the same time, create something potentially much bigger for the sectors, industries and professions they represent.
Rather than every member business or organisation having to start from scratch, trying to understand funding, finding the right training route, working out what role they need and then attempting to attract suitable candidates, Sector Futures brings those elements together into a much more manageable journey.
The ambition is simple: make it easier for industries and professions to find and develop the next generation of talent they need, while creating practical member value and a potential new commercial opportunity for the membership organisation itself.
1. Give your members something genuinely useful
Membership organisations are constantly thinking about member value, but some of the strongest propositions are those that help solve a problem members are already experiencing, and finding good people is a very real problem across many industries and professions.
Through Sector Futures, an association or membership organisation can give its members access to a structured apprenticeship solution that helps them understand their options, shape the opportunity and find industry-ready candidates without expecting them to become experts in the apprenticeship system first.
For a small or medium-sized member organisation in particular, that support could make the difference between “we have thought about taking on an apprentice” and actually doing it, making Sector Futures more than another peripheral member benefit and turning it into a practical workforce solution that can help members grow.
2. Take (a lot) of the pain out of apprenticeship funding
There is funding available for apprenticeships, but understanding what an employer is entitled to, how the funding works and which rules apply is not always intuitive, particularly when Government support, employer contributions and different eligibility criteria can all come into play.
“Fully funded training” does not mean an apprentice’s salary is funded, and it is important to be clear about that, but eligible employers can potentially access substantial support towards apprenticeship training and, depending on their circumstances, other incentives or savings may also apply.
Sector Futures helps you and your members understand that landscape and navigate the process rather than leaving them with a collection of links and hoping they can work it out themselves, because if funding exists to help businesses and organisations develop new talent, complexity should not be the reason they do not use it.
3. Help your sector and industry build its future talent pipeline
This is where the proposition becomes much bigger than an individual apprenticeship, because almost every industry and profession is talking about skills shortages, ageing workforces, succession, specialist expertise and how to attract younger or different talent into careers they may never previously have considered.
Associations and membership organisations have an unusual advantage here because they do not just see the workforce needs of one employer; they can see patterns across an entire industry, profession or membership, and Sector Futures creates an opportunity to turn that insight into action by helping members recruit apprentices into roles their organisations genuinely need.
Rather than waiting until a skills shortage becomes critical and then competing for the same limited pool of experienced people, sectors can start developing talent earlier and build a stronger pipeline for the future.
4. Reach apprentice talent where they actually are
This is where our partnership with Apprentago becomes particularly important, bringing apprenticeship recruitment technology, candidate attraction and connections into schools and emerging talent networks that can help take opportunities beyond the traditional job-board audience.
For industries and professions that struggle to attract new people, or simply aren't well understood by those considering a different career direction, that reach matters enormously because there are brilliant careers hidden inside sectors that many people may never think to explore simply because nobody has introduced them to the possibilities. And importantly, apprentices aren't just 17, 18 or 21-year-olds starting their first job; they can be people of different ages and backgrounds looking for a new route into a career, including career changers, people returning to work and former Armed Forces personnel looking to translate their experience and skills into a new profession. That makes apprenticeships not only a route to younger talent, but a potentially powerful way for sectors to widen their talent pools and bring in people with valuable skills, experience and perspectives that might otherwise be missed.
Part of building a future workforce is therefore not just filling vacancies; it is showing emerging talent that your industry or profession exists and giving them a credible route into it.
5. Create an additional revenue stream for your organisation
There is also a commercial opportunity for the membership organisation itself, at a time when many associations and membership bodies are understandably looking at how they can diversify income without simply adding more events, increasing membership fees or creating products that require significant internal resource to deliver.
Sector Futures has been designed so that the membership organisation can potentially generate an additional revenue stream as members engage with the service, while simultaneously delivering something of practical value back to those members.
That combination is important because revenue diversification works particularly well when the commercial opportunity and the member benefit are not pulling in opposite directions but actually reinforce one another: more member engagement can mean more organisations accessing talent, more apprentices entering the industry and a potential additional source of income for the membership body.
6. Strengthen the industry or profession, not just the individual employer
This is perhaps the part of Sector Futures we find most interesting, because an association or membership organisation exists for something bigger than an individual transaction with an individual member; it may be representing an industry, setting standards, influencing Government, supporting businesses, developing a profession, building capability or helping a whole sector flourish.
Talent belongs in that conversation, and if a membership organisation can help dozens of member businesses and organisations bring new people into an industry, develop skills that are becoming scarce and create career pathways that did not previously exist, the impact can extend well beyond the members directly taking on apprentices.
Stronger talent pipelines create stronger sectors, and stronger sectors create stronger membership organisations.
7. And what about the people already working in the sector?
Future talent is not only about the next generation coming in, because there is another connected challenge facing almost every industry and profession: how do we make sure the people already working within it continue developing the skills they will need next? That is where the wider training ecosystem can connect back into the proposition. Apprentify, an Ofsted-rated Outstanding training provider, offers training and upskilling across areas including AI, data and back-office and business skills, which can complement the apprenticeship pathway by helping organisations think about both the talent coming in and the capabilities of the teams they already have.
Workforce planning should not become an either/or choice between recruiting new people and developing existing ones. An organisation might need an apprentice to help build its future pipeline while simultaneously needing to strengthen the AI confidence, data capability or business skills of its current team, and looked at together those two things become something much more interesting: bringing new talent into an industry while strengthening the talent already there.
Could this work across your membership?
Perhaps the most useful place to start is not with Sector Futures at all, but with your members. Are they struggling to recruit, are specialist skills becoming harder to find, are smaller members interested in apprenticeships but unsure where to begin, have businesses tried to navigate apprenticeship funding and given up because it felt too complicated, and could your industry or profession benefit from a more visible pathway for emerging talent?
If the answer to even some of those questions is yes, there may be a much bigger opportunity sitting here than simply helping one member recruit one apprentice.
Sector Futures is about making apprenticeship recruitment and funding easier for your members, creating an additional source of member value and potential revenue for your organisation, and helping your wider industry or profession build the workforce it will need for what comes next.
Membership organisations already spend a great deal of time representing the future interests of their industries and professions, so perhaps developing the future workforce should be part of that too.
How Sector Futures came about
Sector Futures was created by Membership Bespoke in partnership with Apprentago , bringing together our deep understanding of membership organisations, their members and the workforce challenges facing different industries with Apprentago’s expertise in apprenticeship recruitment, emerging talent and navigating the apprenticeship journey.
We saw an opportunity to create something that could work at sector level rather than employer by employer, making it easier for associations and membership organisations to help their members access funding, attract industry-ready apprentices and build stronger future talent pipelines, while creating an additional source of member value and potential revenue for the membership organisation itself.
